Arita ware history:
The origin of Arita ware was in 1604, when Korean potter Ri Sanpei (Yi Sam-pyeong) discovered high quality white porcelain ore in Arita's Mt. Izumi. He built a kiln in Kamishirakawa's Tengu Valley and began firing porcelain goods.
This also marked the beginning of Japanese porcelain culture.
Thereafter, under the strong protection of the Nabeshima fiefdom, Arita ware continued to be developed as an official kiln business and many high quality products were created.
Many potters from all over Japan gathered to learn porcelain-crafting techniques, and porcelain spread throughout the country.
